This laundry room makeover has the perfect modern farmhouse feel. With added storage and a DIY countertop, it is budget-friendly and functional too!
After buying our builder-grade colonial over a year ago we realized how much potential this small laundry/half bath had.
Unfortunately, the previous color was not our style and it lacked character.
This was the perfect time to give it a makeover!
We love having a laundry room on the first floor but this bathroom gets the most traffic. It was important for us to make the space feel more upscale but also functional.
I wanted to add storage
Other than a coat closet and under the sink, we didn’t have much room for cleaning supplies or back stock items.
To start the project I wanted to make sure it was bright and airy because the space is small.
I also lean towards more of a modern farmhouse style.
Whites and blacks are my jam!
Pinterest is my best friend when it comes to house ideas. And because I am no interior designer I highly recommend finding some inspiration from a fellow blogger.
I loved this design and style by Dear Lillie Studio.
Using her blog post as a guide made this project so much easier to design.
I used the exact paint colors recommended beginning with the white walls.
Most paints no longer require the use of primer but we previously painted all of our bedrooms white. Let me tell you it is difficult to work with. Even with the highest grade paint.
I started with 2 coats of primer and then 2 coats of simply white.
Using a cheap primer with multiple coats helped cover the bold green.
Both a gallon of simply white as well as a gallon of wrought iron cost about $100. We did go for higher quality.
You could make this project cheaper by using lower-grade paints.
When I fist saw the blog post I was convinced the cabinet color was a black. It is very much a gray but it is beautiful and I can’t say enough good things.
The 2 major changes we made were adding cabinets as well as a countertop over the washer and dryer.
I went back and forth on the cabinets because they are the most expensive storage option.
The previous owners used wire closet shelving but removed them before leaving. This would have been the cheapest solution.
Secondly, I considered wood shelving. We DIY’d some shelves upstairs that I love. A solution like this would also be inexpensive.
But ultimately I decided on the cabinets because they would provide the most storage.
We had 65 inches to play with so we chose one 30 inch and two 15 inch unfinished cabinets.
I was able to easily paint them myself and my dad helped us with the install.
The countertop is just plywood we had cut to size.
There are so many tutorials on how to make your own DIY countertop without spending hundreds.
And then the best part, the decorating and styling!
I first made a list of all the items I wanted to store or make room for in the space.
That included my laundry products and cleaning supplies, walking cookies and some items for Max, and all the components to my vacuum.
I also wanted to create easy access to things that we didn’t have before. Like paper towels, tissues, and even a first aid kit.
Most of our cleaning supplies and extra paper products were stored either in the basement or in our upstairs linen closet.
I also wanted to upgrade the hardware, mirror, and light fixture.
The most expensive items I purchased were definitely the baskets. At $30 each, they were not a bargain. But I did save money in other areas.
I searched high a low for an affordable mirror. They are not cheap. It also couldn’t be round. As much as I would have loved a black round mirror.
I found this one at Target but only online which unfortunately is no longer available in black. It was $40 which I thought was a score!
The light fixture was also very affordable at $30 from amazon.
The laundry canisters added the perfect cute touch to store my laundry soap as well as dryer sheets.
I also searched high and low for a good shelf for over the toilet. After having no luck hobby lobby came through and these galvanized baskets were marked half off.
Some of the items in the baskets I already had while a few items were from Marshall’s for a very affordable price.
I have to say I’m so in love with this space. If I hadn’t used Dear Lillie Studio for inspiration I’m not sure what I would have come up with.
The modern farmhouse upgrades as well as the added storage make it a place I enjoy using.
This entire project took only a few days for major painting and renovation. Being strategic and planning also helped me budget and know what types of items I needed for the space.
Tips for making your decor more budget-friendly
- Ikea
Unfortunately, I don’t have access to an Ikea but I know how good the prices are.
Things like greenery, baskets, frames, and other storage solutions would be great to find at Ikea
- Facebook market place
If you enjoy the hunt you could find some great options.
- Thrifting/Goodwill
Thrifting things like baskets could give you a really unique look for only a few bucks.
- Marshall’s and Homegoods
They have awesome options and I tried to find a mirror as well as wall art there but couldn’t find anything I liked.
