The moment we became sick and tired of being in debt. Reasons to start the Dave Ramsey plan and what to do in order to get out of debt.
There comes a time when you get sick and tired of being in debt.
Maybe your so financially stressed you can’t pay your bills.
There could be a time you realize you don’t want to fight with your spouse anymore.
If you are someone who desires to be more responsible with your money maybe this is your moment.
This is my husband and I’s sick and tired moment.
Before we started the Dave Ramsey baby steps my husband and I didn’t think we had any issues with money.
We paid our bills and always on time.
If we didn’t have the money to buy something we didn’t
We were the average working class with standard debt.
In 2013 we even started going on yearly vacations all paid for in cash.
I thought we had a handle on our money.
Because we could put food on the table and pay our bills I didn’t think we had money problems.
When we first started dating I had student loans and a car payment. I had just graduated and my car was brand new.
My husband had student loan debt and it was extensive after being in deferment for many years.
In 2015 my husband bought a car that generously came with 72-months of payments.
We topped it off by taking out a loan for our wedding. Not knowing that my husband would get extremely sick after and not be able to work.
Even with hundreds of dollars in payments per month we managed.
We worked hard paid everything on time and enjoyed life.
We had no idea that living without debt was even an option.
So what was our sick and tired moment?
The real money moment hit when I was sitting on the floor counting all of the cash we had just received from our wedding.
For the 18 months before we got married, we tried to save as much as possible.
This same year we took an 8-day vacation to Jamaica.
My husband also had emergency sugary and spent hundreds of dollars on physical therapy and we bought a brand new car.
Remember this was the couple that thought they didn’t have money issues.
About a month before we got married, when we didn’t have enough money to pay for it, we took out a $20,000 loan.
One week before we got married Michael got sick and was put on disability.
We had to use every dollar we got at our wedding to pay back the bank.
And now Michael was out of work.
But we wanted to buy a house and had no down payment.
That was days before I found the Dave Ramsey plan.
We got married wanted a house and couldn’t afford one.
Responsibly anyway.
Even though we could afford the payments on our cars, student loans and now our wedding didn’t mean we were being good with money.
We were shelling out hundreds of thousands of our hard earned cash to other people.
I wasn’t good with money. I was good at making payments for things I antically couldn’t afford.
Then I found Dave Ramsey.
I truly believe someone somewhere was leading me in a direction I needed to go.
I was newly married and wanting what many people want next, a home.
When I hit the search button to find out who Dave Ramsey was I had no clue what I was getting myself into.
I instantly became hooked.
Fascinated by what he was proposing I thought hmm… I think I should do this.
The reason why his principles stuck with me was that I knew deep down I could do more with my money.
I always worked hard, had a job, had a savings.
Michael and I knew we could do better.
We were ready to buy a house. But the right way.
So I did my research.
I watched his channel and listened to hundreds of others tell their sick and tired moments.
I found a community of people being successful with their money.
The #debtfreecommunity!
Many of which who were in much worse places than I.
People with hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt and paying it off.
I was inspired, motivated, and excited.
As I sat on the floor with a pile of wedding cash and a $20,000 loan to payoff
I found a random man putting hope into those who needed help with money.
That is when I decied to pay off my debt.
Our typical American dream of owning a home was going to have to wait.
Three years to be exact.
Our sick and tired moment was realizing that we could change.
We could do so much better with our money.
Knowing that there was such a thing as living without loans was empowering.
Instead of dwelling on our financial past, we decided to change our future.
After our wedding, I sat on our apartment floor counting thousands of dollars worth of checks and cash.
We had almost enough to completely cover the wedding loan we took out.
The opportunity to make a change was there. So we took it.
I paid off the loan and wrote a check from my savings to pay off my car.
Today My husband and I are debt-free.
And at the time of writing this post are working on baby step 3b. We are about to get that home those newlyweds so desired.
A simple Youtube video changed our lives forever.
Even though we could afford gas in our cars and lavish vacations we were not being smart with our money.
Our sick and tired moment is one of the most cherished memories of this entire journey.
Tell me I want to know, what was the moment you realized you needed to make a change?
